The destination

Torri del Benaco: a medieval village on Lake Garda

Nestled among medieval alleys and enclosed by 14th-century Scaligero walls, Torri del Benaco sits on the eastern shore of the lake, 38 kilometres from Verona.

The Scaligero Castle — built between 1383 and 1393 on the orders of the Scaligeri, lords of Verona — towers over the small harbour with its three battlemented towers. Inside, a historic lemon house from 1760 is still in production today, alongside an ethnographic museum on life and traditions around Lake Garda: fishing, olive growing, and ancient sailing boats.

Torri del Benaco is the ideal base for exploring Lake Garda: the ferry to Toscolano Maderno leaves from the landing stage just minutes away, Garda and Bardolino are less than twenty kilometres distant, and Verona — with its Arena and UNESCO-listed historic centre — is reachable in under an hour. A mild climate, locally produced DOP extra-virgin olive oil and Bardolino DOC wine make this corner of the lake an authentic destination, well away from mass tourism.

Harbour and historic centre

The small harbour is one of the most picturesque on the whole of Lake Garda. Overlooking the water is the Palazzo del Capitano del Lago, historic seat of the Gardesana Council. In the village lanes, the Clock Tower — which housed the Council of 24 for centuries — bears witness to the town’s long tradition of communal governance.

The lakeside promenade of Torri del Benaco

Rock carvings and the lakeside

The area around Torri del Benaco holds the largest concentration of prehistoric rock carvings on the lake, some dating to the Bronze Age. Nearby, the Tanella Cave stretches 400 metres into the slopes of Monte Baldo. At sunset, the lakeside promenade becomes a spectacular display of light and colour on the water.
